Attack on Titan: The Last Attack brought the epic conclusion of one of manga/anime’s greatest stories, with Paradis’ Scouts trying to take down Eren Yaeger and his mega army of Titans to end The Rumbling before the entire human race is wiped from existence.
After Eren’s death at the hands of Mikasa, we see the world healing and rebuilding from The Rumbling, as well as a world without Titans for the first time in thousands of years.
But one moment that takes place during the credits has left fans arguing for years, and it has finally been debunked and confirmed by the creators of the show.
Attack on Titan: The Last Attack begins following Eren enacting The Rumbling, using his Founding Titan powers to activate an army of Colossal Titans that were hidden inside the walls of Paradis. Eren guides his army across the entire planet, stomping on and burning anything and anyone that gets in their way.
Eren’s former friends desperately try and find a way to end The Rumbling while fighting hordes of Titans and Yeagerists, with beloved characters including Hange meeting their demise in the process,
After Eren tells Mikasa where his body is while in the Paths, Mikasa finally puts an end to The Rumbling by decapitating her soulmate, with him opening his eyes at that moment so he could look at Mikasa one last time in his final moments.
Following the end of The Rumbling, civilization spends the next decades rebuilding society and repopulating the earth after billions of people were killed by Eren and his Titan army.
At the end of The Last Attack, we see Mikasa secretly bury Eren under the tree where they used to go with Armin as children. During the credits of The Last Attack, we see numerous images of the same tree, with Mikasa standing under it, with a man standing next to it, and later, children surrounding them.
Some speculated that it was Armin, with Eren’s two best friends grieving for him for the rest of their lives, never forgetting their childhood and the moments they shared. However, some fans believed it was Jean, who had a crush on Mikasa for the entire series.
This has become a hotly debated topic among the community, with many arguments taking place in the process. When Ash and I saw The Last Attack in the cinema, we spent the journey home discussing this moment and why it was likely Jean in the image standing alongside Mikasa.
It now looks like our theories were proven correct as The Last Attack Blu Ray officially confirms that Mikasa and Jean became a couple following The Rumbling and went on to have children and grandchildren together.

The Last Attack Blu Ray features an audio guide, a narrated version of the film for blind and visually impaired people. These guides describe what fully sighted viewers see on screen as they watch. Scripts are carefully written with no speculation given, to ensure that the visually impaired audience gets as much accurate information as possible.
The audio guide can be used during the anniversary showings of The Last Attack in Japanese theaters using the UDCast accessibility app.
During the credits, where the images of the couple can be seen facing the tree away from the camera, the audio guide confirms who is in the image, with it stating that it is Mikasa and Jean.
“As months and years pass, Mikasa and Jean bring their child to visit the grave. Later, the two, now elderly, visit together with their children and grandchildren.”
mihobade, who created the script for the audio guide, confirmed on X that every line needs to be approved to ensure its accuracy and not to use their own judgment, saying, “Please understand that they are produced after various confirmations and considerations, and that the writer does not make free judgments.”
As the Blu Ray hasn’t been released in English yet, nor has it been shown again in cinemas, it is unclear whether this script will be translated and used for the international release.
Ever since the original pre-The Last Attack version of episode 94 aired in November 2023, fans of the series have been debating who is in the scene with Mikasa. Now, there is no doubt, and we definitely know that Mikasa and Jean started a relationship after the events of The Rumbling.
It is unclear how long passed before the two became an item. With Mikasa and Eren’s deep connection and longing to be with each other, it is likely that Mikasa didn’t immediately move on, despite the love of her life wiping out 80% of the world’s population (we couldn’t really blame her if she did)

With the Attack on Titan community spending so long being divided, it will be interesting to see whether this divide continues or whether both sides of the fanbase will finally come together and accept the fate of one of the series’ most beloved characters.
As of right now, it seems like there are no plans for any future Attack on Titan stories to be told, whether as spinoffs, prequels, or sequels. But with such a vast world and history dating back thousands of years, there are plenty of eras and events that we’d love to see covered.
For now, though, the best we can do is sit under the tree and binge-watch Attack on Titan for the umpteenth time, and I will enjoy it just as much as the first time.
