It has now been over a decade since Bethesda released Fallout 4, having only added to the series with the multiplayer-focused Fallout 76, which has seen its share of controversy ever since launch.
Following the release of Starfield in 2023, it is now all systems go when it comes to The Elder Scrolls VI, although it is unlikely we’re going to see it anytime soon, with predictions estimating the game will be released between 2028 and 2030. The previous entry, Skyrim, was released all the way back in 2011.
With the focus now on The Elder Scrolls VI, there has been no news regarding Fallout 5. It may be far into the 2030s, perhaps even 2040, a quarter of a century after the latest mainline entry. This has led to fans finding their own ways of bringing new Fallout content to the world, the most prominent being Fallout: London.
The massive success of Fallout: London has proven that fans are hungry for old-school RPG depth. Now, the project lead for the mod, Dean Carter, is calling out Bethesda directly.
In a new interview with Esports.net, Carter suggested that if the studio can’t step up its game for Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI, it might be time for them to let another team step in. “With the greatest respect to Bethesda, I feel like they’ve probably gone one game too far, if I’m honest,” he said.
“I feel like it’s time to go off into the sunset and look at selling off your IP because people like the franchise, I’m just honestly not sure it’s in the right hands, and it really hurts me to say that because I love Bethesda.”

Turning attention back to Fallout 76, one of Carter’s biggest complaints is the quality of writing compared to the more serious tone of Skyrim, noting that “the one thing we agreed on with Fallout: London is that we wanted to make it more dark and gritty because that’s what Fallout actually is, and I think Bethesda are taking it in the opposite direction.”
With Fallout 5 nowhere in sight, a lot could change between now and its eventual release. The Elder Scrolls VI will certainly give us a good look at what we may expect from Fallout 5, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the near two decades will be worth the wait.
