Helldivers 2 has remained one of the hottest live service games since it launched almost two years ago, with it selling over 12 million copies in a matter of months.
With it being heavily inspired by the likes of Starship Troopers, a movie adaptation seemed inevitable and was announced during CES 2025.
As production ramps up, Sony Pictures has released the first details regarding the Helldivers movie.
Sony Pictures announced on social media that Aquaman star Jason Momoa will star in an upcoming take on the Helldivers video game, set to be released on November 10, 2027.
“Jason Momoa will star in PlayStation Productions’ and Sony Pictures’ film adaptation of the global hit gaming franchise HELLDIVERS, with Justin Lin directing. Coming exclusively to theatres in 2027.”
Helldivers 2 has remained an incredibly popular game since it was released in 2024, with hundreds of thousands of Helldivers still battling the Automatons, Illuminate, and Terminids in a never-ending battle to protect Super Earth.
When it comes to video game adaptations, Helldivers 2 has a lot of potential to succeed on the silver screen. Although with the average lifespan of a Helldiver being two minutes after being unfrozen, it doesn’t bode well for Jason Momoa’s character.
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have collaborated on numerous projects in recent years, with the Uncharted movie grossing $407 million globally. The two Sony studios also released The Last of Us and Twisted Metal TV shows, as well as the upcoming God of War series based on the recent reboot entries in the franchise. Outside of PlayStation-owned properties, Sony is also working on the 2026 Resident Evil movie alongside Columbia Pictures.
Jason Momoa has become one of Hollywood’s hottest actors in recent years. Getting his start on Baywatch in 1999, Momoa got his major break as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones in 2011, and has since gone on to star in movies such as Aquaman, Fast X, and A Minecraft Movie. He also plays Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter movie, set to hit theaters later this year.
If you need your fix of video game movies while you wait, the Super Mario Galaxy movie is set to be released in April, followed by Mortal Kombat 2 in May 2026.
