Very few gaming franchises carry the cultural weight of Street Fighter. With a near 40 year history, the series has stood the test of time while many others have come and gone.
Ever since Street Fighter 2 revolutionized arcades in 1991, it has been the gold standard for fighting games, and is still seen as the benchmark that all 2D fighters are compared to. But, when it comes to the silver screen, Capcom’s iconic brawler has seen far less success, with the likes of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li being considered one of the worst movies of all time, with just a piss poor 3% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
There has always been a razor-thin line when it comes to translating special moves, colorful and outlandish characters, and nonsensical lore to the big screen, with every major fighting franchise failing to produce a movie that is as much as a hit as the video games.
Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter are all guilty of tying their names to some of the worst movies ever made, but things could be turning around for the fighting game genre, with the Mortal Kombat reboot series so far being pretty good, and Street Fighter may finally have figured out the formula for success.
Legendary and Paramount are set to bring the World Warriors back to cinemas on October 16, 2026, and if the latest preview is anything to go by, they aren’t running away from the franchise’s goofy arcade roots.
Ryu Vs. Blanka May Be Cheesier Than The 1994 Movie, And That Is Not A Bad Thing
Paramount recently dropped a brand-new “Special Look” preview, giving fans a look at a matchup we have all fought hundreds of time over the past 35 years in the arcades and at home as Ryu goes toe-to-toe with the feral Blanka and it is as cheesy as you expect it to be — and I am here for it.
The clip gives us a look at Blanka in the movie, turning Jason Momoa into a CGI green beast as he battles Andrew Koji as Ryu. While the original 1994 movie toned down the vibrant colors and campy special movies, replacing them with more realistic martial arts portrayals, Legendary is fully embracing the source material, with Blanka’s electricity sending Ryu across the arena.
One thing that the 1994 Street Fighter movie was missing was the iconic Hadoken, which was pitifully done as a blink and you’ll miss it double handed push. Fast forward to 2026 and we see the fight culminate with Ryu charging up his fireball to send it directly at Blanka for the victory.
With Street Fighter’s Movie History, I Still Think The Movie Could Suck, But That’s Not A Bad Thing
Back in 1994, critics slammed the Jean-Claude Van Damme-led movie, with it gaining just a 11% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, sometimes you shouldn’t take critic’s opinions as gospel as it has transcended its bad reviews and become a cult classic, in part due to Raul Julia’s brilliant portrayal of M. Bison, with not even cancer stopping him from delivering a performance that was up to his brilliant standards.I
I must admit, ever since first seeing Street Fighter: The Movie as a kid in 1997, it has been one of my favorite movies, I would rank it in my top 3 favorite movies of all-time.
Objectively, its trash, but I unapologetically love it and still watch it multiple times a year, with my record being 14 times in June 2024 alone. So, even if the 2026 offering is similar in quality, and I hope it isn’t, I am still here for the ride, even if Cody Rhodes’ wig looks ridiculous.
